Let’s face it - as much as we love fashion and shopping, sometimes picking out a new outfit every day gets tiring, and we get into a slump! If you’re anything like us, we usually go to our tried and true favorites when we don’t want to think about it. So what if we told you there’s a solution to these everyday dressing woes? Enter the Capsule Wardrobe - the easiest way to always look stylish and put together without overthinking.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a limited collection of clothing pieces that can be swapped to create multiple outfits. Typically, they are classic pieces in neutral colors that never go out of style, but feel free to throw some color in, too! Think well-fitting t-shirts, a couple pairs of your favorite pants, a classic dress, a versatile belt, and a cardigan or two.
How to Make A Capsule Wardrobe
The first step to get the most out of your wardrobe is to do a closet audit. Go through all of your clothes, and we mean ALL, and ask yourself, “when was the last time I wore this?” If the answer isn’t within the last month, set it aside. It’s not going in your capsule wardrobe. Also give some thought to your primary lifestyle. Do you work 9-5? Are you a stay at-home parent? Do you spend a lot of time outdoors? Are you a country or city dweller? Determining this will help dictate which clothes to build your capsule with.
Once you have your favorite clothes picked out, it’s time to build your capsule. Remember, it’s all about mixing and matching, so choose pieces that all complement each other in a variety of ways.
Example Capsule Wardrobe
Two Tank Tops
This denim stunner from Sezane is a classic no matter how you wear it. Be sure to have a simple black or white blouse like this one from WVN., and a classic one for layering like this one from Everlane.
Two Dressy Pants
Two Casual Pants/Denim
This oversized cardigan from WVN is the perfect layering piece. This cashmere crew neck from Naadam is another great dress-up or dress-down, and this cropped sweatshirt from Mate is great for your more casual days.
Once you have these basics down, you can play around with accessories, shoes, and pops of color to change things up, but only if you want to. The beauty of the capsule wardrobe is that you don’t HAVE to.
